2008 Intersynodal Remembrances

by Doug Shoemaker

From 2:00 pm Thursday April 10th through 2:00 pm Saturday April 12th, Bob
Peterson, Mike Hurd and I were on the road attending the Southern Province 2008
Intersynodal Conference held at New Philadelphia Moravian Church in Winston-
Salem.  During this approximately 48 hour period we spent almost 20 hours at the
conference and an additional 9 hours driving over 300 miles.  If you do the math on
this time sequence, you will see that a whole lot of time, driving and expenditure
was spent on one event and the question is why bother and was it worth it?  The
answer in my case is a resounding,   “You bet it was!!”
The workshop leader on Friday and Saturday was Luther Snow, speaking on
“Asset Mapping for Congregations.” Luther has worked with congregations and
other community organizations for over 25 years. “Asset Mapping” is identifying the
many positive gifts and assets which our congregation and its members possess
and planning our ministry without worrying about what we could do if we had
others.  The workshop was a great source of information and enlightening on what
can be done when you think “outside of the box,” and I think it may have some
positive results in our congregation. But the workshop was not the highlight of the
conference for me; the highlight was the fellowship of being with approximately 400
other Moravians representing almost every congregation in the Southern Province
and sharing Moravian beliefs and traditions! Sounds kind of syrupy doesn’t it?  Well
it may sound that way, but it was definitely a positive experience for me.
I love our church and its wonderful people, but I also love visiting other Moravian
churches and seeing what their congregations are doing, how they are doing it and
their differences as well as their similarities. From the opening service with a
beautiful pipe organ with all its depths of tones playing our Moravian hymns, to an
impromptu calling of area band members to play the prelude for Friday evening’s
service, and having over forty musicians playing on the grass in front of the new
Philadelphia Church with most of the conference participants singing from
memory—it was an experience I will cherish forever.  Friday night’s program
included Moravian youth and youth leaders singing camp songs, a group
performing in American Sign Language, a slide show of several congregations’
mission trips (including Leaksville) and an emotional and moving talk given by
Tommy Cole, the director of Sunnyside Ministries, talking about their services
provided, their needs and particular blessings that they have been involved with
recently.  People, if you think we have it bad, volunteer to work with this group and
count your blessings!
I strongly encourage all members of our congregation not only to become a
stronger Christian in serving our Church, but to venture forth and see what the rest
of our Moravian Churches and its members are doing!

Congregational Meeting to be Held June 8

The Board of Elders has scheduled the first of a series of Congregational
Meetings. Following worship on June 8 we will gather in Fellowship Hall for a
delicious covered dish dinner. Our guests for the meeting will be representatives
from the Provincial Elders Conference and the Provincial Financial Board. Many
questions were raised during our Church Council in December regarding our
congregation’s relationship to the PEC and our support of the province through the
Provincial budget. We will have an opportunity to ask questions and learn more
about the Southern Province. Please mark your calendars!

Church Clean Up

On February 16th approximately 30 people joined together for the church clean up
project.  We were able to accomplish more than was originally
Planned due to the large attendance.  The focus areas of clean up were the
Choir room, hallway closets and drawers, kitchen, downstairs storage room
and upstairs storage room. Our goal of this project was to clean up, clean out and
organize. There is now a place for everything and everything in its place. Thank you
to everyone who took the time out of their busy schedule to tackle this large project.

Old Salem Tour

There will be a church outing on Saturday May 3rd to Old Salem.  We will begin our
tour at the Moravian Archives with Dan Crews. Upon completion of the tour we will
take time for lunch and then tour all of the historic buildings and toy museum. The
cost of the tour of the historic buildings and toy museum will be $13.00 for adults -
$8.00 for children. There is no cost for the tour of the Archives. Contact Myrna Webb
if you are interested in attending.

Women’s Fellowship News

The Women’s Fellowship held their second quarter meeting on March 10th, joining
the Men’s Fellowship for dinner prior to the meeting. This has been a great time in
joining together to catch up on news and have a great time.

We have been very busy the past three months and have several projects planned
for the upcoming months:

Holy Week Readings – members of the fellowship provided dinner prior to the Holy
Week Readings.

Mission Committee – The fellowship has donated $2500.00 to the Mission
Committee for their projects. We will be providing baked goods for the Golf
Tournament as well as volunteering where needed on the day of the tournament.

Easter Lilies – Our Easter Lilly fund raiser was successful. A total of 37
Lilies decorated the sanctuary on Easter Sunday. Thank you to everyone who
purchased.

Fellowship Hall Upgrades – The Women & Men’s Fellowships are continuing to
work on the upgrades to the Fellowship Hall. New tables are being purchased, the
cornice boards are going to be recovered and then finish up with new paint.

Parlor update – New curtains have been purchased and hung in the parlor.

Mother’s Day Bulletin – We will sponsor the Mother’s & Father’s Day Bulletins. Cost
per name will be $1.00.

Pecans – We still have pecans for sale. If you would to purchase of if you can help
us to sell to your family, friends, neighbors, co-workers please contact Linda
Williams.

The next quarterly meeting will be held on June 16th at 6:30. This will be joint
meeting with the men to begin planning for the 2008 Candle Tea. It is not too early
to begin thinking of how you would like to assist and what crafts or bake goods you
will be making.

Men’s Fellowship

The Men’s Fellowship meeting for March was held at the church with Rocky Turner
preparing dinner. We discussed upcoming projects;
Easter breakfast, painting the fellowship hall and providing funds to the mowing of
the church yard. The April meeting was held at the Italy Grill with nine members
present. After a good meal we settled in for discussion on upcoming projects. We
are working with the Women’s Fellowship to purchase new tables for the fellowship
hall and will be painting once a paint color has been chosen. There will be a new
storage cabinet built for the tables and chairs in the Fellowship Hall. As we have in
the past we will provide funds for our youth to attend summer camp at Laurel Ridge.
Our next monthly meeting will be May 19th, location to be announced.

Report of the Mission Committee

The Board of Elders created the congregation’s Mission Committee to encourage
members’ involvement in and support for church outreach activities. Both local and
distant projects are of interest to the Mission Committee. The committee
coordinates our congregation’s work with Cooperative Christian Ministries, Habitat
for Humanity, and Room at the Inn, and is exploring the possibility of sponsoring a
congregational furniture and appliance “bank” to assist families in need. The
Mission Committee has also encouraged support for the Prestons, the Mississippi
family whom members of our congregation assisted last summer, and international
mission work trips such as the one Mickey Gross made to Nicaragua earlier this
year.
The Mission Committee is sponsoring a golf tournament April 26 to raise funds for
mission activities and is gratified by the wonderful support that the congregation
has offered. The committee would like to hear ideas for future outreach projects that
the congregation might support, especially hands-on ones that involve church
members personally.
Committee members include Cecil Barker, Kristen Christman, Bert Gullett, Bob
Mericle, Bob Peterson, Sara Peterson, Gail Turner, and Jesse Williams.

Pew Cushions Update

Members of Leaksville Moravian have the opportunity to provide the church with
cushions for all the pews in the sanctuary. Pledge commitments are being received
and must be paid by May 18, 2008. The total cost for the cushions will be about
$6,000. Anyone wishing to provide for one pew is asked to make a commitment of
$200. However, a pledge for any amount is appreciated. Pledge forms are available
at the rear of the sanctuary. Please return them to Estellé Gullett.
At the time of writing 23 pew cushions have been pledged.
